Cory Aquino, Former president of the Philippines

Cory Aquino became the first woman president of the Philippines when I was 5 years old. Aside from her famous “laban” hand gesture, it is the color “yellow” that made her mark on me.

As I grow older, I realized that she’s not just a woman president. She’s also a wife of Ninoy Aquino and a loving mother of Kris Aquino. =) I grew up seeing her in rallies on TV and showing her love for her kids and country via interviews. She’s always interviewed in churches and political gatherings.

Now, she’s in the news again but not because she’s in the middle of rallies. After a year of going through her own battle, she finally met her creator. She died today, August 1, 2009 after suffering from Colon Cancer. She’s 76.

I don’t know her personally but just like other Filipinos, she’s also a significant part of my growing years. She’s one of few influential people, woman that I look up to in terms of love for family and country.

I know that the country is grieving for losing a woman of prayers (lots of it) with overflowing love for her country. Let’s continue praying for her soul, her family and for our country that she loved most.
